NASHINOKI JINJA /

NASHINOKI JINJA

Somei, the sacred water, is known as the only well among the three best waters in Kyoto that has been boiling for more than 1,000 years and is said to have been used at the palace dyeing works of Fujiwara Yoshifusa, who laid the foundations of regal politics in the Heian period and whose residence, Some-den-dai, was located in this area. Somei has a sweet, mellow taste and is still revered as water suitable for the tea ceremony. Nashiki Shrine, also known as ‘Hagi no Miya’, creates an autumnal scene with its flexible branches and pretty flowers. The plant is not only an ornamental plant, but also has a deep connection to daily life as a food source, medicinal herb and roofing material. The Hagi Festival is a lively event with dedication ceremonies and tea ceremonies featuring dance, traditional Japanese music, archery and iai.
