MATSUO TAISYA
Matsuo-taisha enshrines the deity Oyamakui and is renowned as the god of brewing. It is said that a large group of the Hata clan, who came to Japan at the invitation of the Imperial Court, brought sake brewing technology with them, and this is the origin of Matsuo-taisha being revered as the ‘First Sake Brewing God of Japan’.
Oyakui is the mountain water deity who drives a stake into Mt Matsuo, and from ancient times the inhabitants of the area have worshipped and venerated the spirit of Mt Matsuo at the upper rock in Osugi Valley, near the top of the mountain. Matsuo-taishaShrine has been revered as the ‘fierce spirit of Matsuo’ since the Heian period (794-1185) for its exceptional spiritual power, and the sacred spring, Kame-no-i, within its precincts is called ‘reviving water’ for prolonging life.
松尾大社「亀の井」
大山咋神(おおやまくいのかみ)を祀る松尾大社は、醸造の神として名高い。渡来人、秦氏の大集団が、朝廷の招きによって来住し酒造技術をもたらしたと言われ、松尾大社が「日本第一酒造神」と仰がれ給う由来はここにあります。
大山咋神は大山に杭を打つ山の水神で、太古の昔よりこの地方一帯の住民が、松尾山の山霊を頂上に近い大杉谷の上部の磐座（いわくら）に祀り尊崇したことに始まります。松尾大社は、平安時代よりその類い希な霊力によって、「松尾の猛霊」と崇められ、境内にある神泉・亀の井は、延命長寿の「よみがえりの水」と呼ばれ、この湧き水をお酒に加えると品質劣化せず旨くなるいわれている。
