Kyoto within Manhattan
The Manhattan, the queen of cocktails, has a long history and many variations have been invented. There are various theories as to its birth, but it is known that it was invented by Winston Churchill’s mother, Janet Jerome, who was still single at the time of the 1876 presidential election in the United States of America, and was busy supporting the Democratic candidate. She was the organiser of a support party at the Manhattan Club in New York, where she prepared a special cocktail that is known today as the Manhattan. Churchill himself denied involvement in his autobiography, saying that his mother was not at the support party as she was in France at the time and pregnant, but it can be considered a romantic legend.

カクテルの女王、マンハッタンは歴史があるためバリエーションが多く考案されています。誕生には諸説があるが、ウィンストン・チャーチルの母親ジャネット・ジェロームが考案したとする説が知られている。1876年アメリカ合衆国大統領選挙の際、当時はまだ独身であったジャネットは民主党候補の応援に奔走。ニューヨークの「マンハッタン・クラブ」で応援パーティーを開催することになり、幹事役であったジャネットが用意したスペシャル・カクテルが今日マンハッタンと呼ばれるカクテルです。チャーチル自身は自伝で「母はその当時フランスにいて、妊娠もしていたので、その支援パーティーの場にはいなかった」と関与を否定していますが、ロマンティックな伝説と想像が膨らみます。
